Good bass guitar for a newbie?

I already play guitar, and I would say I'm a pretty good player. I go to jam sessions with my friends all the time and I always end up playing bass by myself when they're out getting food or something and I stay behind. It's really fun and I have more interest in it than guitar. However, I am not on the same level I am on bass that I am on guitar. I'm pretty much a beginner on the bass. I want a bass that would be a reasonable price for a beginner, but would also do well later on when I become more advanced. My favorite bands and the type of music I like to play are: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Sly & the Family Stone, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Mudhoney, and Led Zeppelin. Thanks.
